A Digital Press is a Digital Press?

Rethinking the digital press industry in light of the new Canon imagePRESS line

Many times people think a product is just a product, no matter who makes, it is all the same. With some products however, people become diehard fans of a specific brand, no matter what changes take place in the marketplace. Sometimes this is due to lack of strong competition, sometimes it is just “the way it has always been”.

Cars are a great example of this. Some people always drive a Honda because that is what they, and their parents, have always driven. Others are Ford truck drivers through thick and thin. I remember a couple of years ago when Ford had their “Fusion Challenge” and avid Toyota and Honda drivers were invited to take the Fusion on extended test drives to see if they would switch. Evidently it worked because Ford adopted that challenge for other models as well.

I see a similar occurrence today with digital presses. Having worked in the printing industry for many years, Xerox was the de facto supplier when it came to digital printing. If someone needed to produce a lot of black and white volume, they bought a Xerox to do it. So when digital color started emerging in the 1990's, it seemed natural to do what had always been done - buy a Xerox. Over the years though, with more manufacturers focusing on improving digital press technology, I think it is time for a “Digital Press Challenge".

The three biggest challenges to digital color have been color accuracy (especially when matching solid colors), consistency, and substrate flexibility. However, its strengths have always been the quick turnaround and variable data printing capability. A few years ago Canon decided to tackle the challenges of digital printing, without sacrificing its strengths.

The Canon imagePRESS 6000, 6000VP, and 7000VP are true digital presses that combine the benefits of offset and digital. The Canon imagePRESS VP is a digital press that prints at 60 and 70 letter pages per minute (regardless of stock weight up to 300g/m², without slowing down), with true 1200 x 1200 dpi, and maintains color accuracy & consistency throughout the print run. The Canon imagePRESS line has many features of an offset press, yet maintains the flexibility to print variable data text and graphics, and provide a quick turnaround.
